Kats close day one strong at NEC

DEPTFORD, N.J. — The Sam Houston bowling team is in eighth place following day one of the Northeast Classic at Bowlero Deptford, not far behind a qualifying spot for the championship bracket.

The Bearkats totaled 9,040 pins as they went 4-1 in baker match competition on Friday. Vanderbilt is in first at 5,333, followed by McKendree (5,142), Youngstown State (5,009), Stephen F. Austin (5,081), Nebraska (5,033), Arkansas State (5,018) and North Carolina A&T (4,978).

"Minus our second set, today was overall pretty solid once we settled in," head coach Brad Hagen said. "The last win was a big one and much needed to seal up the fourth win of the day against a ranked opponent. With this huge of a field the crosses (other teams you follow when changing pairs) and the field make the pattern pretty demanding especially when you can't usually watch what the other team is doing strategy wise.

"We got four wins out of today which is what was needed, and we'll take todays intel and get back to work."

Sam Houston rolled over Long Island 976-837 to begin the day on a high note. The Bearkats stumbled in a 965-861 loss to Merrimack but found their groove with a 1,1010-967 win against Mercyhurst.

The fourth match was a solid bounce back for Sam Houston it cruised to a 1,068-756 victory over Bryant. The Kats capped the day with a 1,025-920 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.
The teams will play traditional competition on Saturday with the top four in total pins advancing to the championship round on Sunday.
