LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Sam Houston volleyball team will conclude its regular season on the road with a pair of matches at NM State on Friday and Saturday at the Pan Am Center.
Sam Houston enters its final week of the regular season still alive for a berth in the Conference USA Tournament, currently tied with Louisiana Tech for the final invitation to the 8-team field. That tie is due to a series split with the Bulldogs in Huntsville October 3-4 to remain even in the standings.
Coach Brenda Gray and the Bearkats will look to put separate themselves from the Bulldogs this weekend to reach the conference tournament in their debut season. To do so they will look to snap an 8-match losing streak that dates back to the October 4 win over LA Tech.
They will need to do so on Aggies' home floor, a place the teams have never squared off before. NM State currently sits fifth in CUSA and brings with it plenty of familiarity for SHSU after competed against each other the past two seasons in the WAC.
Sam Houston got the better of the Aggies in the program's first-ever meeting in 2021 before NM State responded in 2022 to outlast the Kats for a 3-2 win a year ago in Huntsville.
The Kats rank sixth in the conference in total blocks this season. Thanks in large part to middle blocker McKenzie Morvant's 91 total blocks, placing her top five in the conference. Her 23 solo blocks places her at the top of the conference as well.
On the offensive side, the Kats rank sixth in the conference in assists per set behind setter Avery Fowler's 6.04 assists per set. Fowler recently eclipsed 1,000 career assists in the match against UTEP (10/13) and currently sits sixth in the conference in assists per set.
