HUNTSVILLE — The start of the second half did not go Sam Houston's way in a 73-60 loss to Texas State on Friday evening at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats (6-6) led by 10 points at the half thanks to a 3-pointer by
Lamar Wilkerson right before the end of the opening period as all the momentum seemed to be in Sam Houston's favor. The Bobcats (5-5) took advantage of a sluggish start by the Kats to open the final 20 minutes to seize control of the game.
Texas State opened the second with a 7-0 run which included one of the five 3-pointers made by Dylan Dawson, who scored a game-high 23 points, to pull within 33-30 two and a half minutes into the half. Sam Houston answered on a basket by
Cameron Huefner. A 3 by Dawson tied it at 37, and the Bobcats finally came back to take the lead for good at 41-39.
The Kats just couldn't get stops when they needed and shot just 38 percent from the field as compared to 53 percent by the Bobcats.
Wilkerson led Sam Houston with 16 points, and
Souleymayne Doumbia added 14 and seven rebounds. Huefner finished with nine points, and
Marcus Boykin had eight.
The Bearkats hit the road to face former WAC foe Grand Canyon on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
