ABILENE — The Bearkats came, they conquered and they got back in the win column.
Sam Houston hit an extra gear in the second half to speed past Abilene Christian 77-62 at Moody Coliseum on Saturday. It was a needed bounce back win after the Bearkats (18-6 overall, 8-4 WAC) were upset by UT Arlington 70-58 last weekend.
Qua Grant led the way with 21 points, and
Cameron Huefner finished with 15.
Donte Powers scored 14, and
Kaosi Ezeagu chipped in 11 and just missed a double-double with eight rebounds.
It was a two-point game midway through the second half, but it did not stay that way for long. With about six minutes to go Sam Houston made its move.
Ezeagu tipped in a missed shot, and Grant rolled in an acrobatic layup to make it 65-56. Huefner knocked in a pair of free throws and just like that it was a double-digit lead.
The Wildcats got it back to nine only to see Powers hit back-to-back 3-points to push the lead to 73-59 at the 3:13 mark. ACU never got the lead down to single digits after that as the Kats led by as many as 17 on another basket by Ezeagu.
ACU got off to a hot start and led 19-10 in the first quarter. Sam Houston locked the Wildcats down after that and held them to just 38 percent shooting from the field.
The Bearkats return home Wednesday to host UTA at 6:30 p.m.
