Box Score HOUSTON — Sam Houston's bats finally cooled down in a 3-1 loss to Rice at Reckling Park on Wednesday.
The Bearkats (3-2) had multiple scoring opportunities but could only scratch across one run when
Carlos Contreras hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth as they left the bases loaded. It was in stark contrast from their previous two games where Sam Houston scored 43 runs in wins over Rhode Island and McNeese.
Walker Janek hit a lead-off double in the second inning after Rice scored in the bottom of the first. Three consecutive groundouts left him stranded at third.
Myles Jefferson and
Lane Brewster hit back-to-back one-out singles in the third, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat.
Wes Folse singled to begin the fifth and
Joe Redfield followed with a walk, and again the Owls turned the Kats away.
The best scoring chance came in the seventh when
Wes Folse made it to second on an error to begin the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Redfield moved pinch runner
Caleb Cotton to third, but he was thrown out at home trying to score on a ground ball to the pitcher.
Sam Houston heads to Round Rock this weekend to play in the Karbach Classic. The Kats open with Iowa on Friday at 6 p.m.
