
Kats wrap up indoor season at WAC championships

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Sam Houston women placed second and the men eighth at the 2023 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at The Podium over the weekend.
The women's team were co-runners up with New Mexico State, scoring 83 points to finish behind Stephen F. Austin which won the title with 99.5 poins.
Jade Johnson was selected as the WAC Freshman of the Year after finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.93 meters and eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.62 meters.
Rajer Gurode and Anivea Gilbert had an outstanding meet for the Bearkats. Gurode won gold in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.33 seconds and Gilbert placed second at 7.35.
Gurode took silver in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.73, and Gilbert was fifth with a time of 24.52. Jackeria Woodkins placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.12.
Sasha Elizondo captured fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.12, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Amaya Kennison-Jenkins, Dynasty McLennon, Jemia Goree and Woodkins won silver with a time of 3:45.26.
The distance medley relay team of Ellie Galan, Kennison-Jenkins, Ami Clark and Elizondo placed third with a time of 12:09.28. Rachel Maciejeski placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.05 meters, and Charlee Salinas took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 14.74 meters.
On the men's side, Christian Rohlack placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.05, and Christian Rivera was seventh in the mile with a time of 4:12.04.
The 4x400 relay team of Tristan Jones, Jonathan Howard, Jabari Mitchell and Rohlack placed seventh with a time of 3:17.60. Derrick Warren Jr. finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 7.18 meters.
Dominykas Cepys was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 15.56 meters. Luke Thielemann placed fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 18.34 meters, and Bryce Barbay finished sixth in the heptathlon with 4,946 points.
