HUNTSVILLE — What a way to start the 2023 season.
Sam Houston rallied from six runs down in the seventh to knock off UTSA 11-10 on the strength of a three-run walk-off blast by
Kylie Hobbs to open the Bearkat Classic on Thursday.
Trailing 10-4,
Brailey Wasik walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh and quickly came around to score when
Brodie Quinlan launched a two-run home run to right-center field.
Haleigh Carter reached on a fielder's choice then it was
Tricia Yarotsky's turn to lace a two-run shot over the wall in right to make it a two-run game with two outs.
Jordan Peno kept the hit parade going with a double to left, and
Ellie Grill brought the winning run to the plate with a single through the right side.
That put Hobbs to the plate. She wasted no time ending it when she ripped the second pitch she saw over the wall in left for the game winner as the dugout and the crowd erupted.
Wasik also homered in the game, tying it a 1 with a solo shot in the first to go along with a sacrifice fly in the third. Yarotsky added an RBI single in the fourth, and Grill brought in another run with a triple.
Daryn Grams got the win in her Sam Houston debut. She had one strikeout in 2/3 of an inning in the circle.
The Bearkats play Virginia at 12:30 p.m. Friday and Delaware at 5:30.
