Kats march to semifinals at SBL championships

ROWLETT — The Sam Houston bowling team is clicking on all cylinders at the right time.

Fresh off a victory at the Music City Classic to conclude the regular season, the Bearkats picked up a pair of wins over top 10 teams at the Southland Bowling League Championships on Friday at the Rowlett Bowl-A-Rama.

"We had a whole day of different looks but with the same game plan and it mostly worked. I'm happy we were on the good end of things, but we need to take the what if's from today and be mentally ready for anything tomorrow," said head coach Brad Hagen. "Everybody on the team is doing their job in their own way and we need to just stay true to Sam Houston bowling and stay in the moments. As far as I am concerned, we're playing with house money and everything else is a bonus. The freer we are mentally the more this weekend can be pretty special."

Sam Houston opened the day with a 2-0 win over No. 6 Youngstown State. The Kats won the team match 1,085-1,045 and took the baker match 1,083-1,060 to set up a showdown with No. 2 Vanderbilt with a chance to advance to the championship bracket.
The match lived up to the hype of a clash between two top 10 teams.

The Bearkats took a 1-0 lead by winning the team match 1,010-978. The Commodores battled back to tie it with a 939-926 victory in the baker match to setup a winner-take-all, best-of-seven match.

Vanderbilt took the first frame 225-194 then Sam Houston tied it with a 173-172 win in the second game. The Commodores won the third game 204-189, and the Kats once again tied it with a 218-168 win.

Sam Houston took its first lead with a 193-182 win in the fifth only to see Vanderbilt retie it with a 213-155 victory. In the decisive seventh game, the Kats prevailed with a 194-190 win to clinch the match.

Sam Houston will be back in action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
