AUSTIN — Texas scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to hold off Sam Houston for a 7-5 victory at Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.
The Longhorns (5-7) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before the Bearkats (6-8) got going at the plate in the top of the third.
Joe Redfield reached on a throwing error with one out, and
Lane Brewster followed with a walk.
Walker Janek the ripped a three-run home run to left field to put Sam Houston up 3-1.
After Texas answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, Sam Houston added another run in the fifth. Redfield doubled to lead off the inning and eventually came around to score in a sacrifice fly by
Carlos Contreras to make it 4-2.
The Longhorns took the lead for good with the four runs in the sixth, and then the teams traded runs in the seventh and eight with the Bearkats' score coming on an RBI single by Janek.
Sam Houston opens Western Athletic Conference play this weekend when the Kats welcome Seattle U to Don Sanders Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
