SEATTLE — Two big innings by the Seattle offense ended up being the difference in a pair of wins over Sam Houston to clinch a series victory at Logan Field on Saturday.
The Bearkats fell to 14-24 overall and 5-4 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Seattle 11, Sam Houston 5
Sam Houston jumped out to an early lead, but a seven-run fifth inning proved costly in an 11-5 loss to the Redhawks.
The Bearkats got a two-out rally going in the first inning after
Ellie Grill hit a single to right field to begin the frame. She stole second base and advanced to third when
Jordan Peno walked and
Kylie Hobbs hit an infield single to shortstop to load the bases.
Hannah Scheaffer made it 2-0 with a two-run single, and
Tricia Yarotsky added another run with a single through the right side.
After Seattle got one back in the bottom of the first, Hobbs pushed the lead back to three with an RBI single in the second. Peno crossed the plate to make it 5-1 in the top of the fourth on a fielding error.
The Redhawks were able to pull within one with three runs in the bottom of the fourth before breaking the game open with seven more in the fifth to steal the victory.
Seattle 6, Sam Houston 3
In the series finale, Sam Houston once again had the lead heading into the fourth inning only for Seattle to score four runs in the bottom of the frame en route to a 6-3 victory to secure the series.
The Redhawks went up 1-0 in the first, but the Bearkats answered in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI doubles by
Kylie Hobbs and
Haleigh Carter made it 2-1.
Seattle matched it plus two more in the bottom of the inning and added an insurance run the the fifth.
Sam Houston cut the lead to three when
Elia Hebel and
Tricia Yarotsky also hit consecutive doubles in the sixth, but it wasn't enough.
The Bearkats return to action Friday when they head to New Mexico State for a three-game series beginning Friday with a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
