HOUSTON — Houston broke open a close game in the later innings to hand Sam Houston a 14-3 loss in game two of the Don Sanders Cup challenge on Tuesday.
The Bearkats (20-14) won the first meeting 9-3 on March 28, so the two teams will battle it out for the cup on a neutral game at Constellation Field in Sugar Land on May 16.
Joe Redfield put Sam Houston ahead in the first inning.
Justin Wishkoski led off with a double to center field then Redfield cleared the bases with a two-run shot to right field for a quick 2-0 lead.
That was the last time the Kats would lead in the game as the Cougars responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame on five consecutive hits off starter
Logan Hewitt. Hewitt would settle in and hold Houston scoreless over the next three innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen.
The Cougars scored four runs in the fifth and sixth more in the sixth to take a commanding 13-3 lead.
Sam Houston will return to WAC play this weekend when it heads to St. George, Utah to face Utah Tech in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
