Kats swat SFA to earn DH split

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston jumped on Stephen F. Austin early in game two to split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 6-0 victory at Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday.

The Bearkats (16-28 overall, 7-7 WAC) dropped the first game 3-1 before getting a dominating performance in the circle by Emma Guindon in the nightcap.

Emma Guindon tossed a shutout in game two of a doubleheader Friday to lead Sam Houston to a 6-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin.

Needing a win to have a shot at a series victory, Guindon delivered by scattering four hits over seven innings with four strikeouts to improve to 5-7 on the season.

The Bearkats gave her all the run support she would need in the second inning when Jordan Peno got a three-run frame going with a lead-off single and advanced to third on an error. Julia Herzinger was hit by a pitch then Haleigh Carter made it 1-0 with a groundout.

Brodie Quinlan followed with a single, and Emily Telg and Ellie Grill connected on back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to 3-0.

Tricia Yarotsky led off the fifth with a single, and Elia Hebel reached on a fielder's choice as Yarotsky was safe a second on an error by the shortstop. Peno moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt.

The Bearkats dropped down a squeeze bunt by Hannah Scheafer that scored another run. Carter made it 5-0 on an RBI double, and the final run came on another RBI double by Hebel in the sixth.

The Ladyjacks scored all three runs in the second inning off starting pitcher Regan Dunn who fell to 3-6 on the season. Daryn Grams came on in relief and kept the Bearkats in it with 5 2/3 one-hit, scoreless innings.

Sam Houston cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Julia Herzinger led off with a single. She moved to second on a groundout by Haleigh Carter and scored on a single to right by Brodie Quinlan.

The teams will close the series with one game Saturday at noon.
