COLLEGE STATION — Sam Houston marched into Aggieland and bounced Texas A&M 9-2 in a midweek clash at Blue Bell Park on Tuesday.
The Bearkats (24-18) got some timely hits and a solid performance from the bullpen to rebound back from a series loss to Utah Valley this past weekend. Sam Houston hit .375 with runners in scoring position.
The Bearkats wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning when
Justin Wishkoski was hit by a pitch and stole second base with one out.
Tyler Davis, who got the start on the mound, laced a single into right field to bring Wishkoski home for a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies (25-16) matched it in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Ryan Targac.
Sam Houston answered right back in the third inning as
Joe Redfield led off with a single to center field and a stolen base. With one out,
Tyler Davis slapped an RBI double to right, and
Walker Janek launched a 414-foot home run to deep left field to make it 4-0.
The Kats put a four spot on the board in the fifth, again with the long ball.
It got started when Janek reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Jack Tatom moved him to third with a single through the left side to set up an RBI single by
Clayton Chadwick.
Myles Jefferson cleared the bases with a towering shot off the scoreboard in left center field to increase the lead to 8-1. Jefferson also tacked on an insurance run when he drove in pinch runner
Caleb Cotton, who picked up a stolen base, on an RBI single through the right side.
The Bearkats' bullpen closed the door on Texas A&M.
Rome Shubert stepped in for Davis and tossed two scoreless frames.
Marshall Wales gave up a run over 2 2/3 innings, but
Logan Hewitt notched five strikeouts in in 2 1/3 shutout frames before giving way to
Chandler David who pitched a perfect ninth.
Sam Houston heads to Nacogdoches to open a three-game WAC series against Stephen F. Austin on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
