HUNTSVILLE — Jake Tatom hit a two-run double in the ninth inning in game two to propel Sam Houston to a 4-3 victory over Abilene Christian at Don Sanders Stadium on Saturday.
The Bearkats (20-12, 12-2 WAC) have won five straight league series to open the season following the doubleheader sweep. Sam Houston will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth,
Carlos Contreras pulled the Kats to within one with a solo blast over the wall in right field with two outs to get the rally going.
Justin Wishkoski followed with a double, and
Easton Loyd ripped a single to short that hit off the umpire enabling Wishkoski to advance to third.
Myles Jefferson was able to draw a walk to load the bases. Tatom, who came in to pinch hit and play left in the eighth, laced a ball to right center field that fell in front of a diving defender and rolled to the wall to seal the victory.
Tatom was mobbed by his teammates as he rounded second and the team continued the celebration into center field.
The Bearkats other run came in the fourth on an RBI single by
Tyler Davis that tied the game at one. All three of the Wildcats' runs came on solo home runs.
Sam Houston will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.

Sam Houston exploded for four runs in the second inning to capture game one of the series with a 5-1 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Bearkats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Joe Redfield led off the frame with a solo blast to right field.
The Wildcats managed to tie it in the top of the second, but that was the only run they could muster off starter
Coltin Atkinson. He allowed just two hits in six innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Sam Houston took control of the game when
Justin Wishkoski and
Easton Loyd hit back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the second.
Myles Jefferson drove in the first run with an RBI single up the middle.
Clayton Chadwick walked to load the bases, and Redfield plated two runs with single to right field.
Walker Janek walked to reload the bases, and the final run came when
Carlos Contreras walked.
