PHOENIX, Ariz. — Sam Houston battled to the wire but could not stave off elimination in a 2-1 loss to UT Arlington in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament on Wednesday.
The Bearkats (22-35) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning when Reagan Hukill drew a lead-off walk, and Marley Neises followed with a single. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Meagan Smith hit an RBI single off starter
Emma Guindon.
Guindon settled in after that and pitched three scoreless innings to keep Sam Houston in the game.
The Kats rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth as
Jordan Peno reached on a fielder's choice.
Brodie Quinlan then belted an RBI double and moved to third on the throw to give Sam Houston an opportunity to move in front.
Mavericks starter Jessica Adams got a big strikeout to end the threat, and UTA scored the game-winning run in the top of the fifth on a groundout to second base after a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out.
