Red-hot Kats smack No. 22 UTSA 18-2

Sam Houston (28-18) continued its offensive barrage by thumping No. 22Â UTSA 18-2 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field. The Kats have scored 73 runs during the streak which is the most in school history during a five-game stretch since moving up to the Division I level in 1987.

It started with a 9-2 victory over Texas A&M on April 25. Sam Houston then pummeled Stephen F. Austin 21-5, 17-2 in seven innings and 8-3 over the weekend.

On Tuesday, the Bearkats staked starting pitcher Marshall Wales with four runs in the first inning to grab an early lead.

Joe Redfield led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Wishkoski to setup an RBI single by Tyler Davis. Jake Tatom added a base hit, and Clayton Chadwick emptied the bases with a three-run blast down the left field line.

The Roadrunners (33-12) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but it did not take long for Sam Houston to come roaring back.

Davis singled up the middle to open the third, then Carlos Contreras smoked a two-run home run to right field to make it 6-2. Wes Folse added a sacrifice fly in the frame, and Redfield laced a two-run double to right center field to push the lead to seven.

The Kats continued to pour it on as Easton Loyd launched a two-run bomb to right in the fifth, and Tatom added an RBI single in the sixth. Wishkoski put the Roadrunners to bed with a pair of three-run shots over the wall in right in the seventh and ninth to make it 18-2.

Wales (2-4) earned the victory after scattering seven hits across six innings. He allowed one earned run and recorded two strikeouts.

Sam Houston dips out of WAC play this weekend to play Texas Tech in a three-game series in Lubbock. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
