Kats add two more to 2023-24 class

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston men's basketball team has added a transfer from Texas Southern and an incoming freshman for the 2023-24 season, head coach Chris Mudge announced Tuesday.

Davon Barnes, a 6-5 junior guard from Collierville, and CJ Beaumont, a 6-8 forward from Palm Beach Prep in Palm Springs, Florida, have signed with the Bearkats.

Barnes led the Tigers in scoring with 13.5 points per game in 33 appearances last season as a sophomore. He shot 44.1 percent from the floor and averaged 4.4 rebounds per game.

He scored in double figures in 25 games and scored a season high 30 points against Samford. Barnes also scored 22 points against Kansas.

"Davon is a great addition and perfect fit for our program both as a player and a person," Mudge said. "He is a highly skilled guard with a good basketball IQ. He has great size, an ability to score and can create plays for his teammates. Davon brings a high level of toughness that we always look for in our program. He is a high-character young man that the community of Huntsville will love getting to know as a person as much as they love watching him play."

Beaumont averaged 11 points per game at Palm Beach Prep last season. He shot 40 percent from 3-point range and average five rebounds per contest.Â

Beaumont received all-tournament honors at Hoop Scene Tournaments.

"CJ has an incredible upside and will be a guy the fans will be excited to watch for four years," Mudge said. "It is tough to find players with his skill set of elite shooting, dribbling and passing at his height of 6-8 and he is still growing. The sky is the limit for CJ and with his strong work ethic he is going to be a very good Conference USA player."
