HUNTSVILLE — Liberty scored right before the end of the first half to hand Sam Houston a 1-0 loss at Pritchett Field in Conference USA soccer action on Thursday evening.
The setback was the first for the Bearkats (6-5-2, 3-2 CUSA) at home this season. Sam Houston was 3-0-2 at Pritchett Field before Thursday.
There was not much offense from either team until the Flames finally broke through in the 28th minute. Liberty's Ivy Garner was able to outrun the Bearkat back line and use her right foot to push the ball past a diving Paige Fry, who got the start in goal.
Sam Houston fought to tie the match, but just could not get the ball past the Flames. Indigo Sims had a solid chance in the final minutes to score only to see the ball glance off her foot away from the goal.
The Bearkats will host first-place FIU on Sunday at noon.
