FORT WORTH — The Sam Houston women's tennis team opened its 2024 fall schedule against tough competition at the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regional Championships at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU.
Â
Facing a field that included each of the top ranked players and teams in Texas, Bearkat head coach Rob Hubbard was pleased with what we saw from his young 2024-25 squad.
Â
"The ITA Regionals pit us against the toughest players we will face in any event we have on our schedule," Hubbard said. "We tested ourselves against the best and we're pleased with the effort and the progress we made."
Â
Sam Houston's roster includes five transfers and one returning letterwinner from last year's squad. A total of 117 individuals participated in the event dueling for the opportunity to advance to the ITA and NCAA annual national championship competition later this fall.
Â
"We showed some nerves in the first round of singles but that was to be expected," Hubbard said. "We got smoother each day and I'm happy with how they showed what they can do."
Â
Christine Jevicky, the Angelo State transfer, picked up a singles victory for the Bearkats in consolation bracket play. The Littleton, Colorado, product defeated Valeria Ivanovskaia of UTA 7-5, 6-2 in the first round.
Â
Fresno Pacific transfer Nayuma Subba and former James Madison performer Sara Sadadinovic teamed for a pair of doubles victories in consolation play. The pair defeated Eva Arranz and Jessic Board from Abilene Christian 8-5.
Â
The pair followed that up with an 8-3 victory over Daniella Garcia and Andrea Pascal from Prairie View A&M.
Â
"Going up against as strong a field as we saw in Fort Worth certainly is a challenge, but our players showed me they want to compete," Hubbard said. "I was happy with how hard they fought. This was such a marvelous opportunity for our young team to experience. We were especially excited this year because we were able to get each one of our singles players and doubles pairings into the draw."
Â
Next up for the Sam Houston netters is the annual Bearkat Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday. The event will mark the opening for the new Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center.
Â
The newest addition to Sam Houston's modern athletic facilities is located at 515 Bowers Boulevard across from the Don Sanders baseball stadium. The facility replaces the McAdams Tennis Center, the home courts for the Bearkats for four decades.
Â
The Bearkats will play host to squads from UTSA, UT-Rio Grande Valley and Lamar.
