HUNTSVILLE – Friday marks opening day for the Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center, Sam Houston's newest addition to the Bearkat athletics complex.
Located at 515 Bowers Blvd. across from Don Sanders Baseball Stadium, the six-court complex is a gift from long time tennis fans Charles "Chuck" Beckner and his wife Wanda. The Beckners both are avid tennis fans and have a deep-rooted passion for the sport.
The new stadium replaces the McAdams Tennis Complex which has been the home for Bearkat tennis program for 40 years. The new facility features comfortable covered bleacher seating with elevated views of the tennis action.
"Everyone involved with our tennis team is excited about our first competition in our new home," Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard said. "Since the ground-breaking ceremony a year ago, it has been a thrill watching the progress of the construction. We've had great practice sessions on the courts and are looking forward to hosting matches against challenging opponents."
UTSA, UTRGV and Lamar - three of the Sam Houston's long-time Texas tennis rivals - return for the annual Bearkat Fall Invitational Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Since Sam Houston women's tennis moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 1984, the Bearkat have played these three opponents in a combined total of 112 dual matches and 62 tournaments.
"In my eight seasons as head coach here at Sam Houston, our rivalries with each of these teams have been awesome," Hubbard said. "We're looking forward to exciting action to open our wonderful new home court."
Action begins with two rounds of doubles at 2 p.m. Saturday two rounds of singles starts at 8:30 a.m. The final round of singles Sunday also starts at 8:30 a.m.
All four squads will be walking on to the courts at the Tennis Center with youthful rosters. UTSA has the most experienced team with four returning letter-winners. UTRGV welcomes back three players and Lamar sports two returnees on its eight-player roster.
Junior Aaliyah Hohmann is the only returning letter winner for the Bearkats. Transfers Christine Jevicky (Angelo State), Jacqueline Scnabel (Texas State), Adithi Venkatakrishnan (Utah Tech), Sara Sadadinovic (James Madison) and Nayuma Subba (Fresno Pacific) are in their opening season at Sam Houston.
This weekend's action marks the third tournament for the Bearkats. Sam Houston opened the fall schedule with an event at Conway, Arkansas and the annual ITA Regional Championships at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
"Our young ladies showed me they want to compete with their play last week against the strongest field we will face this year," Hubbard said. "They all fought hard. We're looking forward to competing again this weekend. Everyone is excited about stepping on our new home courts for our first home event. "
