Bearkats swat away Louisiana Tech 2-1

RUSTON, La. — The Bearkats certainly like to make things interesting on the road.
Sam Houston was the beneficiary of a highlight reel play by Dana Hanson and Andrea Nugent to fight off Louisiana Tech 2-1 in Conference USA action at Caruthers Field on Sunday.
After scoring their first goal in over a month to tie the match late in the second half, the Bulldogs looked like they stole the momentum. That proved not to be the case, however.
As the final minutes wound down, Hanson was called on for a corner kick to give the Kats (6-4-2 overall, 3-1 in CUSA) an opportunity. She placed the ball perfectly into the box, and Nugent kicked it home for her second game-winning goal of the season in the 85th minute.
There wasn't much offense in the first half. Both teams combined for five shots on goal, including all three of the Bulldogs' total shots.
Sam Houston had 10 shots in the first 45 minutes, but one of its two on goal counted the most.
Early in the first, Jasmine Marquez has taken out hard in the box for a caution trying to score. She drew the penalty kick and easily scored the first goal of her career for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
The second half was much the same until Louisiana Tech (2-5-5, 0-2-2) ended a long scoring drought. A goal in the 60th minute not only tied the match, but it marked the first goal scored for the Bulldogs since Sept. 1, their last win.
The Bearkats return home for three straight matches beginning with Liberty on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
