HUNTSVILLE — Three of the best teams in Conference USA will battle it out for positioning in the league standings this week at Pritchett Field as Sam Houston hosts Liberty and FIU.
The Flames, who stand in fourth place in CUSA at 2-1-1, will face the second-place Bearkats (6-4-2 overall, 3-1 CUSA) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The league-leading Panthers are currently the only CUSA team with a perfect record at 3-0 and could put that unbeaten streak on the line Sunday against Sam Houston at noon.
These are two of the final three home games for the Kats this season. Sam Houston will also host Middle Tennessee next week then hit the road for the final two regular season games at UTEP and Western Kentucky.
Sam Houston comes into Thursday's match against Liberty having won three of its last four games including a 2-1 victory over Louisiana Tech this past weekend.
Jasmine Marquez scored the first goal on a penalty kick, then
Andrea Nugent scored the game winner off a corner kick by
Dana Hanson in the 85th minute.
The Kats and Flames have only played once previously. Liberty handed Sam Houston a 6-0 loss last season in the first year the Bearkats joined CUSA.
This, on the other hand, will be the third time FIU and Sam Houston will meet on the pitch. Both teams are 1-1 with the Bearkats winning 3-2 in the conference tournament last season and the Panthers winning the regular season match 3-0.
