HOUSTON — For the fourth time the Sam Houston bowling team was the final team left standing at Emerald Bowl on Sunday.
After three days of intense competition, the Bearkats knocked off Arkansas State in the championship round to claim the 2024 title at the TRACK Kat Klash. Sam Houston also won the event in 2011, 2012 and 2016.
"Today wasn't easy and anything worth doing never is," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We had a great game plan and thankfully between that and the transition being a little more predictable today with the teams we were facing, we were able to stay ahead of it most of the day.
"It was a huge help that we were able to get into our pearl equipment sooner and stay in the zones we wanted to stay in. A huge key to our success is we had everyone involved, everyone contributed mentally on the lanes, and the ladies followed through with their mission.
The Bearkats opened the championship bracket with a 4-1 victory over Arkansas State, rallying to win four straight after losing game one. That sent Sam Houston to the title game, and the Kats and Red Wolves took it to seven games before SHSU prevailed 4-3.
"It's always very hard to host a high-quality event as well as to win your own event and to win our event four times is an awesome feat," Hagen said. "That's a testament to how much the ladies appreciate our event and understand its value year out. Every event is important but winning your 'local' home event and for the seniors it's pretty special.
"We can't thank our event staff, Amy Van Horn our medical/DOBO for the weekend, tournament directors, Emerald Bowl, Don Ellis the owner, and our sponsors for allowing us the opportunity to host a great event that teams look forward to year in and out."
