DALLAS – Sam Houston running back DJ McKinney has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, per a release from the league on Wednesday.
The redshirt freshman from Tulsa, Okla., was a key piece to the Bearkat offensive attack in 2024 which ranked third in Conference USA in rushing. He leads all freshman rushers in Conference USA with 479 yards and three scores on 95 carries this year, needing just 21 more yards to become the third Kat on the roster with 500 yards on the ground in 2024.
His breakout game came in the Kats' win at UTEP when he rushed for 138 yards and a pair of scores on 14 totes against the Miners. That included a 59-yard touchdown scamper, the longest touchdown run of the season for Sam Houston.
McKinney was one of two Bearkats named to the CUSA All-Freshman team on Tuesday and one of nine Kats overall to earn postseason honors from the league.
He and the Bearkats will close out a historic 2024 season on December 19 when they take on Georgia Southern in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl at the Caesars Superdome.
