Kats trample St. Thomas in rare home game

HUNTSVILLE — Once the shots started falling, Sam Houston cruised to an 80-54 victory over St. Thomas on Monday evening at Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats (6-5), in just their third home game of the season, shook off a slow start remain a perfect 3-0 playing in front of the hometown fans. Lamar Wilkerson led Sam Houston with 20 points as three players turned in double-doubles.

Kian Scorggins was close to tying the school record (21) with a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with 13 points. Cameron Huefner had 13 points and 10 boards, and Dorian Finister finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bearkats used a 5-0 run to cut the gap to 12-11 after falling behind seven right out of the gate. St. Thomas was hot from long range to start the game, connecting on its first two attempts, but missed seven of its next eight shots.

The game escalated quickly in Sam Houston's favor from there.

The 5-0 run turned into a 22-0 run as Huefner and Josiah Hammons hit a pair of 3s around layups by Brennen Burns and Jaxson Ford, who finished with 10 points and just missed a double-double with eight rebounds. The Kats hit 5 total 3s in the opening 20 minutes as Wilkerson also hit a pair to send Sam Houston into the break in front 41-21.

The Bearkats hit the road again Saturday to face Pitt at the Peterson Events Center at noon. The game will be streamed on the ACC Network with the radio call on the Bearkat Sports Network.
