DALLAS — Sam Houston proved to be too much for Dallas down the stretch as the Bearkats closed out 2024 with a 111-65 victory at Johnson Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
The Kats (7-6) had seven players score in double figures led by
Cameron Huefner who had a game-high 20 points.
Lamar Wilkerson chipped in 17 points,
Dorian Finister scored 15,
Erik Taylor and
Kalifa Sakho had 13,
Jaxson Ford finished with 12 and
Josiah Hammons poured in 11.
The first half was close for most of the time as the Crusaders got 16 points from Tommy Fleming as the team was 6 for 12 from 3-point range to stay within single digits.
Sam Houston got hot right before the end of the half to begin to pull away. Fleming drilled a 3 to make it a nine-point game, but freshman
Erik Taylor answered to push the lead back to 12, and Wilkerson and Huefner closed out the first 20 minutes with 3s to send the Kats into the break in front 50-34.
A 10-0 run by Sam Houston early in the second half put the game away. Finister scored four points, Huefner made a pair of free throws, Wilkerson nailed a jumper and Sakho threw down a dunk to increase the lead to 65-43.
The Bearkats have a short break before hitting the road to open Conference USA play at NM State on Jan. 2 in Las Cruces.
