LOCKPORT, Ill. — The Bearkats found their way to the top of the podium this weekend.
The Sam Houston bowling team put together one of its best outings of the season to claim the championship at the Lewis Flyer Classic held at the Strike N' Spare II on Saturday. The Bearkats finished with 13,349 total pins and went 3-0 Sunday in the championship bracket to win the event.
"Huge much needed day and weekend for us," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We've done really well all weekend with the fresh and front three sets so if the lanes got broke down ideally we knew we had a shot today. With so many new faces on the roster, this weekend was and is a huge step forward for this team.
Sam Houston defeated Nebraska 4-2 in the title game to hoist the trophy. The Cornhuskers finished second followed by Maryville, Newman, Sacred Heart and Tulane in the 20-team field.
"Winning is hard and it's even harder to win consistently over the years without having so many new faces on the team," Hagen said. "Learning to win is important and learning to battle through the trenches is even more important.
"Anytime you can insert the 'next lady up' mentality and fulfill what is needed when your number is called, it's going to be a good weekend regardless."
