HUNTSVILLE – The Oklahoma State Cowboys had everything working on Sunday, handing the Sam Houston Bearkats a 19-2 defeat in the series finale on Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
OSU (1-2) exploded for seven runs in the top of the third and scored 11 more times in the fifth, reversing course of an offense that was held in check by the Bearkat (2-1) pitching staff in each of the first two games of the series.
Sam Houston starter Miles Hellums took the loss, getting through a clean first before the Cowboys cracked the scoreboard in the second. One inning later OSU broke it open with seven runs on eight hits, all charged to Hellums' line.
Meanwhile, Cowboy starter Janzen Kiesel got his first win of the young season with 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing just three singles before handing the ball off to the bullpen for the rest of the way.
Eight Cowboys finished with multiple hits in the game, led by Carson Benge's 4-for-5 day. The OSU right fielder had hits in his first four at-bats and drove in four runs. He had a pair of doubles, while Zach Ehrhard, Tyler Wulfert and Nolan Schubart all hit homers.
Nine Bearkats picked up hits, with Caleb Cotton picking up a pair of singles and Easton Loyd walking twice and picking up an RBI single in the ninth. Brady Christensen had a single and a walk and Jace Martinez picked up an RBI with a two-out infield single in the ninth.
Despite the loss, Sam Houston still took the series from OSU with wins in each of the first two games of the weekend.
The Kats will next head to Rice for their first midweek game of the year on Tuesday night at Reckling Park. The game is set to be aired on ESPN+.
