HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats pounded out 14 hits, 10 for extra bases, in a 14-3 shellacking of HCU on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Kats (6-2) finished with seven doubles and hit three home runs on windy night built for offense. Walker Janek led the way with three hits, finishing a triple short of the cycle, and Lane Brewster slide into the leadoff spot and finished the night with a game-best three RBI.
Despite the offensively-laden night, Gavi Coldiron delivered his second solid midweek start of 2024, shutting HCU (4-5) out for 5.0 innings with four strikeouts before giving way to the bullpen. He exited with a comfortable 8-0 lead and earned the win, despite the Huskies getting on the board with three solo homers of their own in the later innings.
HCU's Ethan Coronel made his first career start and got off to a quick start with a pair of punchouts in a 1-2-3 first inning, but Hunter Autrey pushed home the first two of seven runs charged to the Husky starter with a no-doubt, 2-run homer just three batters into the second inning to open the scoring.
Autrey was joined by Janek and Brady Christensen with home runs, while Wes Folse had a pair of doubles and scored three times. Jace Martinez joined Folse with three runs scored, and both Easton Loyd and Jeffrey David had two hits apiece.
The Kats finished with four runs in the second inning, getting a 2-run double from Brewster in addition to Autrey's second dinger in as many games. Sam Houston got another run on a balk in the third and tacked on three more in the fourth on an RBI bunt by Brewster and a 2-run homer from Janek, his 21st career longball.
Loyd and David added RBI in the sixth, and Folse and Caleb Cotton had RBI in the seventh before Christensen closed the scoring with a solo homer in the eighth.
ON the mound, the Bearkats used three bullpen arms to get to the finish line, getting 2.0 frames from Rome Shubert before freshmen Brock Rod and Ryan Peterson worked through the final innings.
The Kats will have little time for respite as they host the UT Arlington Mavericks on Wednesday night beginning at 6:30 p.m. The game is set to be aired on ESPN+.
