Kats tame Lions in doubleheader action

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston used the long ball to sweep a nonconference doubleheader against Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday at Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Bearkats (11-13) dropped the Lions 8-2 thanks to three home runs in game one before blasting three solo shots in game two for a 3-0 victory.
Sam Houston will return to Conference USA action this weekend when New Mexico State comes to town for a three-game set. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Sam Houston 3, Texas A&M-Commerce 0
Ellie Grill broke a scoreless tie in the third with a solo home run as the Bearkats completed the doubleheader sweep with a 3-0 win in game two on Tuesday.
Sam Houston put the game out of reach in the sixth with two more runs. Allie Saville matched Grill with her second solo blast as Tricia Yarotsky followed with a one-run shot, which was also her second on the day.
Starting pitcher Amy Abke was solid in the circle, allowing only two hits in seven innings with five strikeouts to move to 4-3 on the season. She got into some trouble in the sixth when Commerce got a pair of runners on with two outs but was able to coax the next hitter into fouling out to end the threat.

The Bearkats gave up a run in the first inning in game one, but that lead didn't last long.
Ellie Grill tied it at 1 with a solo home run to lead off the the bottom of the inning, and Sam Houston took the lead for good on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Holliday in the third.
Tricia Yarotsky blew the game open in the fourth. She ripped a three-run home run to centerfield as the Kats took a commanding 5-1 advantage.
The Lions cut it to 5-2 with a run in the fifth only to see Sam Houston answer. Holliday came through with a solo shot this time, and Hannah Scheaffer poked an RBI single to right center field.
The final run came on another solo blast, this time off the bat of Allie Saville in the sixth.
Abigail Young picked up the win in the circle for the Bearkats. She improved to 3-4 on the season after tossing five innings with four strikeouts.
