HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston could not capitalize on late offensive opportunities in game one of a Conference USA series as it fell to New Mexico State 6-2 on Friday at Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Bearkats (11-14, 0-4 CUSA) left three runners on base before the final innings, in which the Aggies (12-11, 2-2 CUSA) hit a two-run home run to push the lead out of reach.
Daryn Grams was tabbed with the loss for the Kats as NM State would grab four runs off of her. Grams was able to strikeout five batters in two innings of work.
The Aggies got the scoring started early, driving in an early run in the top of the first inning with an RBI single.
Ellie Grill was able to hit a lead-off single, but Sam Houston left her stranded with three-straight outs.
After neither team got on base in the second innings, it was NM State's three-run third inning that put the Kats in an early hole. The Bearkat offense took off however, and after a Grill double down the right field line.
Tricia Yarotsky would send one deep over the left field wall to cut the lead to two runs for the Aggies.
From that point, Sam Houston was not able to cash in on any run opportunities. Leaving potential tying run on base after a ground out to first.
The Bearkats will look to even the series Saturday against New Mexico State at the Bearkats Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
