Kats keep tournament hopes alive

HARAHAN, La. - Sam Houston staved off elimination in the Conference USA championship after splitting its first two matches Friday at Colonial Bowling Lanes.
The sixth seeded Kats lost in the first match on the winners side of the bracket against No. 3 Youngstown State 2-0. However, the Bearkats bounced back in the contenders bracket, taking down No. 7 Stephen F. Austin 2-0.
The Kats started off their series against Youngstown State strong, only finding themselves behind by a single pin in the traditional matches. As the matches played on however, the Penguins slowly increased their lead until the Kats could not find a way back.
Feeling the pressure of falling behind in the series, the Kats came out red-hot in the baker matches. Denise Blankenzee and Carli Betz put the Kats ahead early, but Youngstown State scored pivotal wins in games three and five to clinch the series.
With a potential early exit looming, the Bearkats got a huge performance in match one against Stephen F. Austin from Stephanie McCoy. Her score of 236 pins in game four pushed the Kats ahead in the traditional matches. Noey Sarntong would put the finishing touches on the tradition matches, scoring a 210 in the final game to seal the win.
The baker matches would turn fruitful for the Kats as well. Alexia Cassman and Cassie De La Fuente would come up huge in the matches, scoring 226 and 199 pins respectively. Their effort would be just enough to stave off a Lumberjack comeback and continue Sam Houston's run through the tournament.
The Bearkats will get a rematch against Youngstown State in the contenders bracket Saturday at 9:30 am. The matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
