EL PASO — UTEP used a late rally to sneak past Sam Houston 3-0 on Friday evening at Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
The Bearkats (15-23 overall) got a solid performance from starting pitcher
Amy Abke. She did not allow a run until the fifth inning, but she did not receive any run support as Sam Houston fell to 4-12 in Conference USA.
One of the best scoring opportunities for the Bearkats came in the second inning.
Julia Herzinger singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a walk by
Jordan Peno.
Hannah Scheaffer grounded out to advance the runners into scoring position, but the Miners got a strikeout and line out to end the threat.
Scheaffer got Sam Houston cooking again when she ripped a single to begin the fifth. Once more starting pitcher Faith Aragon was able to get out of the frame unscathed.
UTEP finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. The Miners' first hit of the game was a solo home run which proved to be enough despite a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
The Bearkats will try to even the series today when the two teams take the field for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
