HUNTSVILLE — Head coach Brad Hagen and the nationally ranked Sam Houston bowling program is pleased to announce the addition of Ana Paz Gonzales for the 2024-25 season.
Gonzales, from Lima, Peru, is the first ever-international signee from Peru. She will join the Bearkats as one of the most decorated youth athletes to come out of Peru.Â
"Ana organically is very competitive and focused on the lanes which is a huge natural asset we look for," Hagen said. "She's traveled all over the world competing at a high level from the Middle East to South America which makes her well-seasoned to handle our regimented scheduling. She's excelled among the adults as well as her peers at the youth national and international level which is experience worth noting."
Over the last year, Gonzales has seen the medals grow with her success and from her Peruvian National Team's staff behind her. Most recently this spring she had the honor to compete in Qatar as a "Friendly," earning a gold medal in singles at the Qatar International Open. Nationally in her home country of Peru, she was able to take gold in doubles and the team event, while adding silver in trios.Â
In South America, Gonzales has excelled and medaled in several events including the CONSUBOL Youth Championships bronze in doubles, bronze medal in teams at the Iberoamerican Youth Championships, and lastly, silver in team, silver in trios and a bronze in doubles at the South American Youth Championships.
"At the end of the day we need individuals on this roster who are going to push themselves every day without reservation in the classroom and on the lanes," Hagen said. "I believe Ana has a strong understanding of what this opportunity means to her and her family as well as her Federation so excelling at the highest level is a priority. Ana graciously is ready to attack the NCAA bowling world with open arms and enthusiasm."
Next up for Gonzales will be another even representing the Peruvian Youth Bowling Team. Peru is one of 39 countries that have confirmed in the upcoming IBF Youth World Cup which will be held in South Korea from July 7-18 in Incheon.
Gonzales is the 14th international bowler to join the SHSU bowling program going into its 15th season, and she will be the 18th to have represented their national team as a Bearkat.
