Kats close recruiting class with promising transfer

HUNTSVILLE — Head coach Brad Hagen and the nationally ranked Sam Houston bowling program is pleased to announce its final signee to the 2024 campaign, transfer standout Breana Chewens.
The former Stony Brook University bowler, a native of Wichita Falls, is coming back home to Texas to officially join the Bearkats after competing with the Seawolves the last two years. Chewens will have two years to make her impact known while wearing the orange and white.
"Bre is a great diamond in the rough and another individual who can really make an impact in a short period of time such as others who have transferred in before her," Hagen said. "You can tell whole heartedly that she's ready to get to Texas and get to work as she gets acclimated to SHSU. One of her greatest strengths at this point in her career and with her past experiences is knowing what she wants, and her next competitive chapter is what motivates her more and more."
Such as other Bearkats before her, Chewens has a very strong sense of mission as well as academic discipline. Graduating from Burkburnett High High School, she was an AP Scholar Athlete as well as a Top 10 graduate in her class.Â
Chewens' greatest success on the the USBC Collegiate side came last year in 2023 when she was the first female for Stony Brook to qualify for the USBC Nationals through the Dayton Ohio Sectional Qualifier.Â
She was the last spot in to advance out of the sectional, averaging 201.67 and punched her ticket to Nationals. At the USBC ISC Nationals hosted by South Point Casino in Las Vegas, Chewens went on to qualify 13th by averaging 202.50 entering match play. Additionally, she has a 300 game to her name as well as held as high as a 220 average during her career.Â
"I am always striving to find the best unknowns with the greatest amount of upside potential and athleticism, and I believe Bre fits into exactly that," Hagan said. "It was important for me this season to add some experience and depth to an already talented roster which adding Bre and the new ladies will check that box. Her local and USBC Collegiate national experiences to date along with her academic work ethic will make her a vital asset here as a Bearkat as we start this new journey all together."
Chewens brings a 3.70 transfer GPA to the program and will look to continue her education within the psychology department while pursuing her academic options and aspirations in criminal law.
