HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston returns home looking to build off an upset of a Power 5 team when Houston Christian comes to Pritchett Field this weekend.
The Bearkats (1-0-1) will face the Huskies on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Sam Houston also has a road game Sunday against another former Southland Conference rival in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m.
Landri Townsend scored the go-ahead goal in the second half after freshman Gabrielle Williams knocked home the equalizer in the first as the Bearkats notched their first-ever win against Houston with a 3-1 victory at the Carl Lewis International Complex on Aug. 18. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to the first meeting between the two programs in 2004.
The Bearkats opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 15 at home. Tiana Johnson accounted for Sam Houston's lone goal.
Cassia Souza was solid between the posts for the Bearkats last week. She had two saves in against SFA and eight saves against Houston. One of her saves against the Cougars came in a crucial moment with the game tied at 1 in the second half. She challenged the shot and was able to clear it near the goal to set up the game-winner.
The three goals scored against the Cougars marked the first multi-goal game against Houston since the two teams first played to a 3-2 Houston victory on Sept. 12, 2004. The victory was only the second in program history against a Power 5 conference and first over a team from the Big 12. Sam Houston defeated Mississippi State of the SEC 1-0 in overtime at Pritchett Field in the season opener on Aug. 25, 2006.
Both matches will be streamed online on ESPN+. For home ticket information, call the Ticket Office at (936) 294-1729 or click here.
