BEAUMONT — An early deficit proved too much as Sam Houston fell on the road to former Southland Conference rival Lamar on Sunday at the LU Soccer Complex.
The Bearkats dropped to 2-2-2 on the season with wins coming against Houston and Houston Christian. This is the third consecutive match against the SLC with Sam Houston having tied Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the previous two outings.
The Bearkats were fighting an uphill battle right out of the gate after the Cardinals wasted little time taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kamryn Harvey. Just a few minutes later, Rafiatu Alhassan scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute.
Sam Houston showed resiliency once again, not rolling over in the face of adversity.
Gabrielle Williams pulled the Kats within one when she found the back of the net in the 54 minute to begin the second half. It was Williams' third goal of the season, moving her into a tie with Landri Townsend for the team lead.
Sam Houston stays on the road this week for two matches. The first one is Thursday at ULM then the Kats face Rice on Sept. 8.
