HOUSTON — The breaks went against Sam Houston in a 1-0 loss to Rice at Holloway Field on Sunday evening.

The Bearkats (2-3-2) were slow to get going as the Owls (6-1-1) went on the offensive from the start. Rice scored in the first five minutes of the match and almost had another goal.

Sam Houston put the brakes on the Owls after that.

The Bearkats started to heat up in the second half and had some opportunities to tie the match. Sam Houston had four shots on goal, two by Landri Townsend who was on the wrong end of some close scoring chances.

Goalkeeper Cassia Souza locked down the Owls after the opening goal. She finished with four saves, including a challenge on a breakaway that prevented an insurance goal late in the second half.

Gabrielle Williams had a chance to tie the match in the final minute, but once again Rice made a stellar play to block the shot to end the match.

Sam Houston closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule when Southern comes to Pritchett Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
