Bearkats drop Bearkat Classic opener

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston volleyball team could not fend off Lamar in a 3-2 loss on Friday night at Johnson Coliseum in the opening match of the Bearkat Classic.Â
The Bearkats (4-6) fell to the Cardinals 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 11-15. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak against the former Southland Conference and WAC foe.Â
Sam Houston took control in the second and third sets, but Lamar came back to force a fifth where the Cardinals easily got the win. The Bearkats were no match for the Maja Malinowska who had 33 kills on the night for Lamar. Â
Lylah Washington led the Bearkats with a career-high 19 kills. Alyssa Fielder had 11, and Chelsea Butler had 9. Â
Sam Houston will finish the tournament Saturday against Texas Southern at 1 p.m.Â
