JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Sam Houston made the most of its opportunities to efficiently put away Jax State 2-0 in Conference USA action at Jax State Soccer Complex on Friday.
The Bearkats (5-3-2) scored two goals on four shots including Savannah Knight's first career score that proved to be the game winner to remain undefeated in league play at 2-0. The Gamecocks (5-6) finished with four shots on goal to drop to 0-2 in CUSA play following a match that was moved from Thursday due to inclement weather.
The closing minutes of the first half seemed like they would just tick off the clock without any offense as both defenses limited scoring opportunities. In fact, the two teams combined for only four total shots on goal in the opening period which set the tone for the rest of the match.
The Gamecocks had three shots on goal, but the Kats were able to deny Jax State. Keeper Cassia Souza saved all three attempts.
Sam Houston had one shot on goal. And the Bearkats took full advantage.
The Gamecocks picked up a yellow card on a hard foul just outside the box to set up a free kick for the Kats. Kaylee Dressback placed the ball perfectly in the box, and Knight came streaking and punched the ball into the top back of the net with a header for the 1-0 lead.
A corner kick late in the second half sealed the victory for Sam Houston. Pam Murray placed a corner squarely in the box and the ricochet came back to a wide-open Landri Townsend, who scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Bearkats will travel north to Kennesaw State for a match on Sunday at noon.
