Bowlers in second at Northeast Classic

NEW CASTLE, Del. — The Sam Houston bowling team is in second place following day one of the Northeast Classic.

The Bearkats totaled 5,292 pins as they went 5-0 in baker match competition on Friday. Nebraska (5,443) is in first while Youngstown State, Vanderbilt (5,258) and Arkansas State also went 5-0.

"Today was a group effort and a huge kick start to our spring worth building off from," head coach Brad Hagen. "Low end to high end at this center tend to play like different times zones and once transition hits, it's quick, and you need to stay ahead of it. Everything was pretty straightforward today until the last set. After a slow start and a lineup change, with a late comeback, it came down to the tenth frame.
"A huge first shot strike by anchoring senior Denise Blankenzee forced Duquesne to mark in the tenth to force a potential roll off. After an errant shot by Duquesne and a double strike by Denise, the comeback was secure. Wins and momentum always define this event. We need to take what we gathered today and keep forging forward."Â

The teams will play traditional competition on Saturday with the top four in total pins advancing to the championship round on Sunday.
