Kats open Lewis Flyer Classic

LOCKPORT, Ill. — Sam Houston picked up four wins following day one at the Lewis Flyer Classic on Friday at the Strike N' Spare II.

The Bearkats went 4-1 with 5,006 total pins, which has them in ninth place heading into day two. Sam Houston is 171 pins outside of the top five behind leader Jax State, Wichita State, North Carolina A&T, Maryville, Youngstown State, Oklahoma Christian, Stephen F. Austin and Nebraska.

"Any day you can get four wins it's a great thing, but we worked way too hard today for them," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We're having great days of prep and practice sessions, and we need to keep finding a way to carry those over. Lane to lane and pair to pair this center can be demanding. We are too good not to execute what is needed when the moment presents itself. If we can continue to be disciplined and not be blinded by false information, we still have a shot to move up the standing. At the end of the day though we need Ws."

The Kats opened the day with a 1,039-1,004 victory over SFA then defeated Valparaiso 1,046-872 before losing to Nebraska before knocking off Maryville 1,058-1,048. The final win of the day was a 943-828 victory over Augustana.
