WACO – The Sam Houston baseball team surrendered seven unanswered runs to allow the Baylor Bears to pull away for a 9-2 midweek win on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Sam Houston (3-13) had just cut into an early 2-0 Bear lead with a run in the fourth before Baylor (13-3) began to add on to its lead, upping it to 9-1 before the Kats were finally able to get back on the scoreboard in the ninth on an RBI double from Blake Brown.
The hit was the second of the game for Brown, but it was Jace Martinez who went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored to lead the Bearkats (3-13) 9-hit attack at the plate; however, four fielding miscues and a red-hot Baylor offense proved to be too tall of a hill to climb. The Bears finished with 14 hits, including five for extra bases, and cashed in on the Kat miscues each time.
Noah Kendrick took the loss after making his third straight midweek start, striking out a season-high three batters without a walk in 3.2 innings to fall to 0-2. He was the first of four SHSU arms to see action, including Cam Diaz who also punched out three Bears in 2.1 innings of work.
Drew Leach was the winner for Baylor on a bullpen night which saw nine pitchers take the hill. He threw 1.1 innings to move to 1-0 on the year.
