ARLINGTON – A 7-run fourth inning provided the fuel the Sam Houston Bearkats needed to pick up a 9-7 win over UT Arlington on Wednesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Sam Houston (3-9) put an end to a 4-game losing skid with the win, its fifth overall vs UT Arlington (3-6 ) and its first at Clay Gould Ballpark since 2012.
The Kats trailed 4-0 after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the third, an inning highlighted by the first of a pair of 2-run homers by UTA's Tyce Armstrong.
But Sam Houston responded by sending 12 batters to the plate in the following inning and scoring 7 times despite Brady Christensen's 2-run single being the only hit of the inning. The Kats took full advantage of the free bases in the frame by drawing five walks and being hit by a pitch twice.
The Kats added single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings on RBI singles by Blake Brown and Ryan Franden to make a winner of Cole Marthiljohni who had three strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Zak Johnson followed Marthiljohni by striking out the side in the sixth and was the first of three relievers to follow the night's winner. Danny Valadez eventually got the final three outs to record the first save by a Bearkat this year.
