HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston fell behind early and dropped its sixth game in a row on Tuesday, falling 9-1 to Rice at Don Sanders Field. Â
The Kats (7-22) did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, but trailed after giving up a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame. The Owls (7-23) then delivered a pair of homers in the sixth and tacked on three more in the eighth and one in the ninth to get its second win over SHSU this year. Â
Connor Mondey got his first start as a Kat and did not allow a hit in 3.0 innings; however, despite striking out three Owls, he was saddled with his first loss of the year. Felix Schlede also struck out three, while Tate Hickman had a pair of punchouts in relief.Â
At the plate, Jace Martinez reached base four times with a pair of walks and two singles. But the Kats were held to just four hits in the game, none for extra bases. Â Â
