HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston fell behind early and dropped its sixth game in a row on Tuesday, falling 9-1 to Rice at Don Sanders Field.
The Kats (7-22) did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, but trailed after giving up a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame. The Owls (7-23) then delivered a pair of homers in the sixth and tacked on three more in the eighth and one in the ninth to get its second win over SHSU this year.
Connor Mondey got his first start as a Kat and did not allow a hit in 3.0 innings; however, despite striking out three Owls, he was saddled with his first loss of the year. Felix Schlede also struck out three, while Tate Hickman had a pair of punchouts in relief.
At the plate, Jace Martinez reached base four times with a pair of walks and two singles. But the Kats were held to just four hits in the game, none for extra bases.
