HUNTSVILLE – NM State scored five times in the top of the fifth and opened the weekend with a 6-2 win over Sam Houston on Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

Sam Houston (7-23, 1-6 CUSA) got a brilliant bullpen performance from Cam Diaz as the junior took over in the sixth and allowed just one base runner in 4.0 relief innings, striking out eight; but it was too little too late for the Kats after the Aggies (16-14, 4-3 CUSA) did all the damage they needed to do an inning earlier.

The teams traded runs in the first inning and the score stayed right there until the fifth when NM State got all their runs with two outs, snaping the tie when they pushed across the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Consecutive run-scoring singles followed before a bases-loaded walk made it 6-1, which was enough for starter Jack Turner who earned his third win of the year with nine strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Noah Kendrick struck out a career-high four hitters in his second consecutive Friday start, but exited after 4.2 innings and was charged with three runs allowed, taking the loss to fall to 0-5 on the season.

NM State finished with 11 hits in the game, while the Kats had just five. Grant Nottlemann had a pair of singles, while Sam Lee reached twice on a pair of walks. Jace Martinez drove in both Bearkat runs.
