PHOENIX — Grand Canyon dominated possession and shots on goal. Sam Houston made its best opportunity count on Friday evening.
The Bearkats (2-2-1) got a clutch goal from a true freshman, and veteran keeper
Katie Bahn was unbeatable in the net in a 1-0 upset of the Lopes at GCU Stadium. The victory avenged Sam Houston's 6-0 loss to Grand Canyon in only previous meeting when both teams were in the WAC.
The teams played fantastic defense for the first 78 minutes of the match Friday as neither team was able to score. The Lopes did have a pair of potential goals negated because of offsides penalties.
Freshman
Ellie Morgan ended the stalemate when she got some room in the top of the box and planted it past the keeper into the bottom left corner to put the Kats up 1-0 in the 79th minute. It was the Clear Lake High School product's first career goal and proved to be enough with Bahn finishing with a clean sheet.
The Austin Peay transfer faced an onslaught of attacks as the Lopes peppered the goal with seven shots. She denied each one to post seven saves, including one inside the box in the 82
nd minute she was able to swat away.
The win was Sam Houston's first on the road this season and snapped a three-match winning streak for the Lopes, who beat Oregon 2-0 on Aug. 31.
The Bearkats return to Texas to face SMU in Dallas on Sunday at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on the ACC Network.
