LYNCHBURG, Va. — Sam Houston struggled to find a rhythm offensively as the Bearkats fell 2-0 to host Liberty at the Conference USA Championships on Tuesday at Osborne Stadium.
The third-seeded Kats (8-6-3) fell to the second-seeded Flames for the second time this season by two goals. Sam Houston attempted just one shot during the match as an early goal proved to be enough for Liberty to advance to its third finals appearance in a row.
The Flames benefited from a very late review on a questionable handball call that led to their first goal. Game play was not initially stopped and almost a minute and a half ticked off the clock before officials allowed the play to be reviewed.
Junior
Taylor Vance appeared to defend a ball with her chest and shoulder, but the officials indicated the ball touched further down her arm following a quick review. The handball was in the box and resulted in a penalty kick goal less than six minutes into the match.
Liberty added an insurance goal in the second half after Sam Houston keeper
Katie Bahn was knocked down in the box, and the net was left open. Despite the two goals, Bahn continued to shine in the net, finishing with four saves while facing 12 shots.
