NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Sam Houston volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the Stephen F. Austin Tournament at Shelton Gym.
The Kats (1-2) opened strong taking a tight 5-set match from Abilene Christian University, but fell 3-1 to the Ragin' Cajuns in the night game.
The SFA Tournament will conclude on Saturday afternoon against former Piney Wood rivals SFA, starting at 2:00 p.m.
Sam Houston 3, Abilene Christian 2
Bearkats went the distance, taking the match with set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25,22, and 15-9.
Freshman
Chloe Monson powered the Bearkats to a win in the first set, delivering 5 of the 18 kills from the Bearkats. SHSU took set four after falling short of a comeback in set three. Bearkats rallied back from a four-point deficient late in the match, but was unable to take the set.
In the final set, Sam Houston dominated for a 15-9 win after using the Wildcat's five errors to their advantage.
Chelsea Butler and
Lauren Malone each joined Monson in double figures kills, while
Shaelin White led the Kats with 17 digs. Monson added 11 digs for her second career double-double and
Lauren Malone secured one of her own with 16 scores and 16 digs.
Setter
Avery Fowler dished out 42 assists, while Butler and
Lillian Hamilton had two blocks apiece.
Louisiana 3, Sam Houston 1
Sam Houston lost in four sets against the Ragin' Cajuns 12-25, 15-25, 27-25, 21-25.
Chloe Monson led the team with 12 kills, and
Chelsea Butler was close behind with 10.
Shaelin White led the team with 18 digs, and
Avery Fowler had 25 assists, two aces and a block.
Sam Houston will take on host SFA on Saturday at 2 p.m. to close out the tournament.
